Education & Training

Education and Training provides short-term, intensified trainings that allow individuals to acquire essential workplace skills quickly and with little time investment, resulting in increased success rates. Our trainings prepare individuals more readily for job development by providing tools for job searching, as well as basic skills in customized areas. The trainings include:
• Occupational Literacy – provides services to individuals who are Limited English Proficient. Training in business English, computer skills and customary American workplace practices are provided in a four-week course to assist students in achieving long-lasting success in the job marketplace.
• Financial Literacy – provides small classes and one-on-one training in personal financial management, including checkbook balancing, household budgeting, basics of credit and investing and long range planning, among others. Instruction is provided in English or Spanish.
• Keyboarding Skills – provides small classes and one-on-one training in using US standard and 101 enhanced-keyboards to help with hand positioning and timed exercises. Lessons are beneficial for beginners and experienced typists who want to keep up with the office environment.
• Introduction to Microsoft Word – an intensive introductory course designed to provide participants with basic computer word processing skills including: document creation, business letters, formatting and editing documents and using the drawing tools to create invitations and flyers.
• Introduction to Microsoft Excel – an intensive introductory training designed to provide participants with competency in basic spreadsheet functions and operations, document creation and accounting and bookkeeping operations.
• Customer Service Skills – provides basic training in retail-based customer service including strategies for handling difficult customers, active listening skills, basic computer skills and bottom line business. Instruction is provided in English or Spanish.
• Resume Building Workshops – a self-assessment session designed to assist participants with identifying appropriate occupational interest areas. Participants develop a resume and research current market conditions to assist them with their job search.
• Interview Technique Workshops – participants prepare to explain how their qualifications exceed the qualifications of a job. Students get ready to answer “why” they are applying for a specific job position. A mock interview is held at the end of the session. Ex-offenders are trained to answer specific questions honestly and skillfully, leading to employment.
• Strategies for Success Workshops – a self-assessment workshop designed to assist participants with identifying appropriate occupational interest areas, conducting on-line job search and completing on-line applications.
• Work Ethics & Employer Expectations Workshops – participants learn basic work ethics and employer expectations including attendance and leave policies, teamwork and job safety.
• Clerical Skills Training Program – this four-week intensive course has been developed for those desiring the skills and attitudes necessary to obtain successful entry level employment in office/clerical occupations. The course includes keyboard skills, Microsoft Office basics, customer service, telephone communications techniques, filing, essential business forms, business letter writing and office machines.
• Retail Skills Training Program – this curriculum-based program focuses on teaching hands-on retail skills, including personalized customer service, selling and promoting products that include cash register and computer training, customer dispute resolution, monitoring inventory, product display and promotions and loss prevention.
